Tiger Woods sped from his own Orlando driveway, across kerbs and a central reservation, collided with a fire hydrant and ploughed to a neighbours tree.
For the world sportsman, this episode during the hours of 27 November, 2009, began a tumultuous, scandalous and redemptive decade.
In the past two years golf had been mastered by Woods unlike any other player. He won majors – the championships that define professions – and reeled championship victories off all around the world.
In the 10 years hes won only one important but that his life has turned around. He is a father and a player capable of winning at the highest degree.
Comparing the most recent decade with all the all-conquering period that preceded it, Rory McIlroy, who is one of the biggest rivals, says:I believe what he needed to go through to reach the other side in the previous 10 years is equally impressive.
In the wake of the wreck, Woods picture invisibly depths that were black and painful prior to eventually soaring to hit on epic highs.
That night shattered glass surrounded him and has been groggy by a cocktail of painkillers and sleeping tablets. He then lost consciousness and had been ferried to hospital in an ambulance.
We were about to discover that this proud winner was, in reality, a deeply flawed person. The crash happened in the minutes following his wife Elin had found out that her husband had been cheating.
In the days and weeks that followed, it became clear Woods had been a philanderer. Celebrity gossip magazines and websites were all over the story. Since the downfall of Woods made headlines everywhere they became an essential resource for hard news.
Hed always guarded his privacy. The whole world knew that his address: 6348 Deacon Circle Florida 34786.
The crash occurred a week after Woods added his career and another championship success. He won the Australian Masters in Melbourne, but terrorists from the National Enquirer were about his tail. The superstar magazine suspected Woods had a girlfriend, Rachel Uchitel, at tow in hotel and the luxurious Crown Casino.
When he returned to America he warned his wife the Enquirer will be publishing a story. He refused many accounts say and its allegations that he set up a telephone between Elin and Uchitel to reassure his spouse.
On 26 Woods moved into the nearby Isleworth clubhouse to invest Thanksgiving evening playing with cards. He went back to bed, took an Ambien tablet and returned home.
Now Elin started to go through his cell phone. She texted Uchitel and then called her. In the process she affirmed the affair. I understood it, shes widely reported to have stated. Elin confronted a Woods, who ran to his driveway, crashed exiting his property and jumped to his own Cadillac Escalade.
No-one tracked than journalist Robert Lusetich in 2009. He wrote Unplayable, a book.
Lusetich had been playing golf with buddies on 27 November. The Australian reporter recalls:Some of these men looked at his mobile and he explained :Tiger Woods was injured in a car accident and nobody understands how awful it is.
It was just likewow, thats incredible. So I sent Steve Williams [Woods caddie] an text. He had been in New Zealand.
Williams called Mark Steinberg, Woods long-time representative .
Lusetich heard back from Williams. Steinberg said everything will be OK, the author says. And then he said:Dont believe anything that youre gonna listen to . That is a peculiar thing to say. When we saw the story in the National Enquirer it became clear that this was indeed a scandal of some magnitude.
Many women subsequently came forward to say they had relationships with the planets best golfer leaving his supporters and fellow gamers amazed.
I have learnt some of the newest sites this week, explained Irishman Padraig Harrington, who had been one of Woods biggest rivals at the moment. it is a phenomenal story, the spotlight is enormous.
When Woods was front page of the New York Post for 20 successive days, it beat a record set by the 11 September attacks on New York and Washington in 2001.
Im just astounded, admitted the 2006 US Open winner Geoff Ogilvy. Just how did nobody know? Tiger Woods is very recognisable.
Woods retreated – that the sport he dominated with 14 personalities, second only to the most prosperous participant of the game. He had been on track to overhaul this record of 18 big titles. It seemed only a matter of time because of such a specific player, one who had grown much larger than just golfclubs.
A man dominating a white guys game, a grin can flash. Woods was the foundation of transnational companies such as Nike, Accenture, Gillette, Gatorade and Tag Heuer. He had been the number one golfer in the world and Forbes forced him sport billionaire.
A seemingly idyllic national scene was with a photogenic spouse and 2 young children. On the world he had it all, but inside there was chaos.
Plus it came back with the revelations that detailed his behavior resulting in that vehicle crash to the fore.
Woods was discharged from hospital the next day and headed to Arizona where he had plastic surgery to repair his lip which had been cut at the crash. His whereabouts were known to his closest confidants.
I could not feel that Tiger Woods are reckless, states Lusetich. He had essentially convinced himself that he had been bulletproof due to prior incidents and being in a position to cover up them.
On 11 December Woods released a statement that said that he was taking an indefinite break from golfing .
I am deeply aware of the disappointment and hurt my adultery has caused to so a lot of men and women, most of all my wife and children, he published on his site.
After Christmas, he checked to Pine Grove Behavioural Health and Addiction Services, a centre in downtown Hattiesburg, Mississippi. It was reported he enrolled on theGratitude program to take care of sex dependence.
Woods has never supported the character of his remedy. Gratitude was designed by Dr Patrick Carnes, who introduced the word sexual dependency into clinical circles in 1983.
What seems certain is that Woods faced a savage regime of self analysis well away from the external world. It meant he missed the birthday of his son Charlie.
I can not return to where I had been, he explained. I want to be part of my kids own lifetime along with also my daughters life going forward.
Not everyone was convinced of the knowledge of Woods remedy. A prospective president weighed on Fox News:I would recommend Tiger just call it a terrible encounter, said Donald Trump.
Say bye-bye, go outside, be a excellent playboy, win tournaments and have a good life. The most essential thing Tiger may do is triumph and also return to the golf course. This whole thing with sexual rehab, I am not sure Im a believer.
February 2010 woods returned home about 15 to Isleworth and it was time.
Four days later, surrounded by close friends and his mother Kultida, he stood at PGA Tour headquarters in Florida in front of a television camera in a room. TV networks in the US interrupted schedules to broadcast Woods 14-minute announcement. Never had this champion looked so vulnerable.
He apologised for hisirresponsible and selfish behaviour and afterwards his mother said:I am pleased to be his mother, period. He didnt do anything illegal. He did not kill anybody.
The Open champion at the moment, Stewart Cink, commented:It was probably one of the toughest things he has ever had to perform.
The evening before the apology Woods moved to hit on on his first golf balls since the scandal broke. I struck them solid, he is reported to have told Hank Haney, his coach at the moment.
He received significant criticism and returned to action at the first major of the year a little under two months.
He frustrated us all, Payne said in a notable chairmans news conference. And more importantly, our children and our grandkids. Our hero did not live up to the expectations of the role model we saw for our children.
Unexpectedly, Woods ended fourth at the tournament, a magnificent result against the top players in the world following four months.
Within days Woods divide with Haney, who wrote a tell-all book, The Large Miss.. It detailed his time coaching Woods that were prosperous and provided unique insights on someone secretive of his life on and off the program.
Haney revealed Woods obsession the player had trained by Navy Seals and undergone punishing regimes that put enormous stress on his body.
During his career he has had multiple surgeries to fix neck, knee and spine problems. Some of those accidents, I think, didnt come from golfing, says Lusetich.
He proceeded through that crazy phase of wanting to be a Navy Seal and did a few dangerous things that hurt his spine and his knee.
But to the very top of the world rankings of golf Woods returned by 2013. He dominated the PGA Tour but didnt add to his key tally. Emphasized in the manner that he was pre-scandal, he appeared a weaker force on major weekends.
What occurred 10 years ago, I think there was always the aura of invincibility around Tiger, therefore I presume that revealed a bit of a vulnerable side to him, says Rory McIlroysaid
It humanised him a small bit. Its obviously very tough to come back from something like this from a mental standpoint.
But McIlroy is impressed by how Woods dealt against the injuries that jeopardized his livelihood. He has been through the wars just with what hes needed to go through emotionally, says the current world .
I recall to this day the lunch we had in 2017 and he was kind of talkingperhaps this really is it? I cant play anymore. Subsequently 15 months after hes winning the PGA Tour again.
Weeks after that pessimistic dinner date, on April 20, 2017, Woods had what was a career-saving back fusion operation. This was the last throw of the dice, operation basically aimed at making him to become a busy father and family man. That will be a bonus, if he can compete as a golfer. its hard to say how much better I feel, Woods wrote a month after the procedure, his fourth and most significant back surgery.
But, though he had been mended there was shame to be endured. To handle pain and the rehab, Woods was dependant in a cocktail of sedatives and painkillers. Within days of that optimistic evaluation, he swallowed a possibly deadly concoction of medication.
In his machine there has been Vicodin for pain relief, even Dilaudid – a substance to combat anxiety – Xanax to alleviate anxiety, THC – the active ingredient in marijuana and Ambien to assist sleep.
We know this because he was discovered by Jupiter police slumped at the wheel of his Mercedes car which was parked up using punctured tyres May, 2017.
Video footage of an incoherent, shambolic Woods moved viral. His first mugshot that was puffy-eyed stared from nearly every newspapers front page.
His DUI (driving under the influence) arrest led to prosecution for reckless driving. There was no alcohol in his system however the episode jeopardized echoes of his calamitous downfall of 2009.
The largest portion of his comeback and also the one that will get attention fromCamp Tiger is that DUI, claims Lusetich. I think that has been rock bottom.
When everyone noticed him slurring, not able to walk, the amazing Tiger Woods and video, there was a sadness to it. It was a tragic vision of a great but now fallen star.
Woods needed to place his life. He discovered he was able to swing a golf club and furthermore got clean. It was a revelation and meant he can do what he did – compete.
The month he came near to winning the 2018 Open in the US PGA and Carnoustie. He won the season-ending Tour Championship, eclipsing McIlroy, his partner in the final round.
And fast forward a few seven months then and hes won another major, McIlroy says. I think that its been phenomenal.
I think that it shows his character, his mental ability, his self love that he can return after all those accidents, if it be private life or the bodily injuries hes had to endure.
Woods has rebuilt his entire life . Elin divorced him in the aftermath of the revelations that followed. Between 2015 and 2013 he obsolete US skier Lindsey Vonn, someone of the special demands of life in the sporting spotlight. The golfer is at a relationship with Erica Herman. After Woods won the Masters of this year, she had been there with his children to greet him Augusta.
For the winner, the simple fact that his children were there to watch his 15th major title, his first since the pre-scandal US Open of 2008, was the most thrilling aspect of that outstanding victory last April.
I think he achieved more as a individual in the previous decade, states McIlroy. Consider the fantastic job hes done as a daddy to Sam and Charlie.
That takes up a massive chunk of his time now, trying to be together as far as possible. He doesnt travel as much since he doesnt need to be away from picking them up watching any of that or their football matches.
That aspect of him has blossomed because of all the stuff hes had to go through, provides the Northern Irishman.
Woods acquired 6, this month. The Zozo Championship at Japan supplied his 82nd PGA Tour success, equalling the record.
The championship spilled into a fifth day because of weather delays. Over the final morning English golfer Ian Poulter heated up along with Woods.
He is amazing, states the 43-year-old, whos played during the Woods era.
It had been as great as Ive seen Tiger Woods ever struck it. Ever. It was as controlled as I have ever seen him, Poulter adds.
To hear this attack, see the ball flight and to see him finish off that tournament, Tiger has still got it. He does not want a game, even his A minus game remains great enough to get the work done.
His image has softened although woods remains personal and in to his life he lets more people in a controlled way. On Golf TV, at which he provides insights for readers, he demonstrates humour and charm.
He did a fantastic job of not allowing the human being to emerge and be noticed, Lusetich says of Woods previous life.
Its not like hes an open book these days but things like he does now with Golf TV, and I know they pay him, open him up more and there is more depth to him.
Its been a remarkable journey during the past decade. From stone, Woods rides high. He is a redeemed, revived winner still more critical to his game than any other participant.
He returns to Australia another man, next month. He captains his nation from the Presidents Cup. Hes playing well he had to pick himself as a choice.
44 is turned by him at the end of this calendar year, a leader and participant, fighting and fit and a champion of stuff than the figure that hid many secrets in the very first part of his livelihood.
As McIlroy says:He is a terrific ambassador for our game. Everyone involved you at the media, ourselves as gear manufacturers, players – everyone gains from Tiger Woods being at the very top of golfing.
I think we should count ourselves very fortunate that hes still in that position.
Tiger Woods: His scandalous, tumultuous and redemptive decade, sparked by a car crash
