This summer manchester City manager Pep Guardiola was advised to limit his spending – and it could leave him having a central defensive annoyance.
City are to find the extent of the harm Aymeric Laporte continuing in Saturday’s 4-0 win against Brighton.
However, Guardiola states”it doesn’t look great” and knows any absence will leave him with just two mature centre-backs.
This summer, skipper Vincent Kompany abandoned and was not replaced.
That left John Stones and Laporte Otamendi since the champions’ just recognised fundamental defenders.
City were keen but weren’t prepared to coincide with the #80m Manchester United compensated Leicester to the England man.
“The club told me there’s a limit and we cannot go for it ,” said Guardiola.
The Spaniard spent a bar album #62.8m on midfielder Rodri, plus an added #60m on Portugal full-back Joao Cancelo, who is yet to make his debut. City recouped throughout Fabian Delph Danilo and Douglas Luiz’s sales around # 60m.
“We can’t manage it like other groups can manage it,” added Guardiola.
“I complained about this. We paid a lot of cash for a good deal of players, that is why we have a squad with a lot of quality. But you have a limitation. Maybe in the future, but we cannot do it.”
Guardiola expects Stones to return after a two-game absence for the trip however after this month with all the Champions League campaign beginning after that, also EFL Cup commitments, the City boss might have to get inventive in central defence.
That could indicate Brazilian midfielder Fernandinho or Kyle Walker shifting from the spot before.
“It is exactly what it is,” said Guardiola. “We’re in the time and the guys will need to step forward.
“If Kyle Walker has to perform a central defender, he’ll behave as a central defender. We must locate solutions.”
