Joe Cullen confident of challenging for major honours after his European Tour success

Joe Cullen claimed his first European Tour title with a victory over Michael van Gerwen month andThe Rockstar told Sky Sports that he considers he is now capable of challenging for major honours on a constant basis.
Even the World Grand Prix gets under way in the Citywest Hotel on Sunday and though Cullen hasnt progressed beyond the next round over the Emerald Islethat he heads on to Dublin with renewed confidence.
The Bradford star has been hailed as a potential winner and that he demonstrated his credentials in the European Darts Matchplay of last month, defeating James Wade, Glen Durrant and Van Gerwen at Mannheim night on one.
Needless to beat Michael in a final – its difficult enough to beat Michael at any point. To beat him in a final does make it that extra bit special, Cullen told Sky Sports.
If I am honest I talked with Michael van Gerwen about it later. I saidYou need to feel like this every week. He looked at me and I was like:I understood that I could not be beaten by anybody
If I am in the practice room and I say thatThere is no means Michael van Gerwen can beat me, 100 percent of the clinic room could laugh me out of there. I knew that nobody could conquer me.
It was a very surreal feeling and one that Ive never felt before, when I won both Pro Tour titles. The challenge today is to contact that sense on a more regular basis.
It had been an 2019 for Cullen, who endured opening-round exits in World Matchplay and the UK Open.
Even though he admits he has demonstrated to himself that he is capable of scooping big stage names his solitary triumph came at the cost of Rob Cross from the season-opening Masters.
winning the European Tour last month confirms what you already know. I knew I was good enough to win you but if youre not winning any it is okay saying you know youre good .
Ive proved within a format that I can mix it with the very best and theres not a reason why I cant go on to win a major.
The Rockstar has featured in a major semi-final that was solitary, where he also surrendered a commanding lead against Simon Whitlock at last seasons European Championship.
Cullen has also reached the last eight years in every one of the World Matchplay, UK Open, Masters and World Series Finals, but he believes he is completely equipped to struggle for the sport honours.
Im definitely a point player. I think I went through three stages. The first stage I was great on the ground and Ive got some excellent results.
The year when I had been really great on the stage and got some good effects but not as great on the ground and I believe its just a case of trying to combine both today.
The European Championship last year – I must the semi-finals and should have got to the final. I overlooked a dart to get that point but it must happen to be more comfortable than this, you shouldnt throw a 10-7 lead away in a hurry to 11.
Cullens prompt focus switches into Dublin which admittedly has not been a happy hunting ground for him, with his previous few appearances.
I think Ive got to the last 16 onto a couple of events but until you get to the quarter-finals you do not really feel a part of this tournament and I feel a good deal of the players would concur, he admitted.
It is still somewhat new to me especially with the short format in the very first round. It can be over as quickly as half an hour. I believe that the after you get within the championship, the more youll have the ability to judge it.
The format that is double-start distinguish the men from the boys along with Wayne Mardle has referenced the importance of having a plan of attack in case youre unable to pin your preferred starting dual.
Many players alter their practice patterns to compensate for its component that is double-start, though Cullen made dont feature in his clinic regime.
I think I am one of those few that does not really practice doubles whatsoever, he explained. Im a believer that if youre able to hit trebles you can hit doubles. My practice regime is about throwing at trebles wholly.
If you place three on the top wire of the treble 20 no issue. It could become an issue if you consistently keep putting three to the cable of dual top in practice and it may grow to be a mental thing.
Even going into the Grand Prix its no different. Im good enough to strike a bigger goal so the bigger target should not be too large of a issue.
The 30-year-old suffered a chastening defeat at July against Ian White in his World Matchplay opener, however he has the opportunity for redemption because he facesThe Diamond from the round in the Citywest.
But Cullen demonstrated that retribution will not be on his own mind against the world No 10.
When I had got beaten 10-0 and got completely blown away, I would have looked in it in a negative way, but Id shots at doubles in 5 out of the 10 thighs and it had been a couple of shots, it was not like the strange dart today and again.
It was merely one of those days. Me and Ian [White] get on really well, a lot travel so there wasnt any malice in its conclusion.
Literally within an hour of the game ending we were laughing about that. It was a freak outcome and I am convinced there will not be a repeat of it this moment.
Speculation surrounding the next years Premier League line-up normally begins to mount in this business-end of the year Even though there are a variety of major events before over the forthcoming months.
Cullen has made no secret of his desire to feature in the competition and he will consider himself unlucky to have missed out in 2019.
The three-time PDC title winner was rated over nine contenders who featured in this years roadshow and that he admits his omission was a bitter pill to swallow.
At first glance I wont lie when it was announced I was quite upset. I was believing what more do I want to do in order to get chosen, he added.
There was lots of talk about it on interpersonal media and Barry Hearn actually replied to someone that questioned why I wasnt in it.
His answer wasJoe is at the top 16 so he is considered for automatic choice, so at least there was an excuse as to why I wasnt getting picked.
Obviously its a target [Premier League] but I am trying not to think about it too much because in the past two years I think I have been World Championship run out from being majorly in the look-in for a Premier League place.
Maybe that is performed into my head going in the World Championship subconsciously. I think that its well-documented that Ive been great at precisely the same.
I try to check at it in a good manner – I am number 16 on the planet without a fantastic run at the World Championship therefore that it cant be a bad thing. If you continue getting wins under your belt TV in big events then you will rocket up the rankings.
Cullens ability hasnt been in question, however, he is now a far more mature proposition and using a stage title under his belt,The Rockstar is faking to reveal the world of darts his own mettle.
Joe Cullen was speaking to Sky Sports Josh Gorton. It is not very long to wait patiently till darts is back on Sky Sports, the World Grand Prix gets under way on Sunday, October 6 October 12 and seven days of coverage continues until the final on Saturday.
